Oximeters typically utilize visible light in the red and infrared spectrum. Common wavelengths used in oximeter include 660nm red LEDs and 940nm near infrared (NIR) LEDs. These wavelengths are optimal for measuring oxygen saturation levels in blood. Co-oximeters may use a broader range of wavelengths to assess various forms of hemoglobin, including those affected by carbon monoxide, with specific wavelengths tailored to the absorption spectra of different hemoglobin species.
Refractometers, which are instruments used to measure the refractive index of a substance, typically use light in the visible spectrum. The most used wavelength in refractometers is the sodium D-line, which is approximately 589.3 nm. This wavelength corresponds to the yellow light emitted by sodium lamps, and it’s chosen because it’s near the middle of the visible spectrum, making it a good compromise for precision across a variety of substances and conditions. Light with a wavelength of 589 or 590 nm appears as bright yellow to the human eye.
