Near Infrared (NIR) LEDs are widely used across various industries because they penetrate deeper into materials and biological tissues than visible light without causing damage or significant heat.

Characteristics

  • Unobtrusive, Non-visible Light Source: NIR LEDs above 950nm are virtually invisible to the human eye. 740nm or 850nm LEDs might be visible as a faint glow, depending on the emitter's bandwidth and the viewer’s eyes' sensitivity. The invisibility of NIR LED light sources is useful in driver or occupant sensing and surveillance.
  • Deep Penetration: Our NIR LEDs offer deep penetration through various materials and mediums, making them ideal for security, medical, and scientific applications.
  • Long Lifespan: Designed for durability, our NIR LEDs boast extended operational lives, reducing the need for frequent replacements and maintenance.

The unique attributes of NIR LEDs benefit OEM equipment and instruments in security, industrial sensing, medical diagnostics, phototherapy, agricultural, consumer, automotive, water quality, R&D, and analytical instruments. Here are examples of OEM equipment and instruments utilizing near-infrared LEDs:

Applications

  • Photoelectric and Optical Sensors: Utilize our precise IR LEDs for optical sensing applications, from counting to movement detection. Photoelectric sensors, optical proximity sensors, presence or occupancy sensors, and position sensors commonly use NIR LEDs. NIR wavelengths around 850nm and 940nm are standard in near-infrared photoelectric applications. 630nm to 700nm red LEDs are important where visible light is required for photoelectric sensor alignment or positioning.
  • Night Vision and Surveillance: NIR LEDs illuminate areas without visible light, allowing cameras to capture clear images in complete darkness, which is crucial for security cameras, wildlife monitoring, and military operations. Night vision devices typically use LEDs in the 850nm or 940nm range. 850nm LEDs provide a bit more range and are slightly visible as a faint red glow, whereas 940nm LEDs are almost entirely invisible to the naked eye, offering stealth but at the expense of range.
  • Remote Controls: Power your remote control devices with our efficient IR LEDs, ensuring reliable signal transmission.
  • Driver monitoring systems (DMS): Since the light from NIR LEDs is not visible or harmful to human eyes, DMS NIR LEDs are often utilized to unobtrusively monitor driver alertness, gaze, presence, and position to prevent accidents due to distraction or drowsiness behind the wheel. Passenger or occupant monitoring systems (OMS) and other cabin sensing systems also use near-infrared LEDs combined with photodiode or image sensors. Driver Monitoring Systems often use 850nm or 940nm LEDs, as these wavelengths can penetrate sunglasses and operate effectively in various lighting conditions without distracting the driver.
  • Phototherapy: In phototherapy applications, NIR LEDs are used alone or with red and orange visible LEDs. NIR light can penetrate deeper into the body and may provide enhanced healing compared to visible light during the treatment of specific conditions.
  • Pulse Oximeters: These devices use NIR LEDs to measure oxygen saturation levels in the blood noninvasively. By comparing the absorption rates of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin at specific NIR wavelengths, oximeters can provide accurate readings of blood oxygen levels. Pulse Oximeters commonly use wavelengths around 940nm and visible red light (around 660nm) to measure oxygen saturation in blood.
  • Non-dispersive IR (NDIR) Spectrometers: NIR LEDs provide a light source for NDIR spectrometers, which measure the absorption, reflection, or transmission of specific NIR wavelengths, which is essential for material and chemical analysis, environmental monitoring, gas monitoring, and quality control. NDIR spectroscopy uses specific NIR, SWIR, and MWIR wavelengths depending on the absorption, reflectance, or scattering characteristics of the material, gas, or chemical being monitored or detected.
  • Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) Devices: Functional NIR (fNIRS) spectrometers are a highly specialized type of NIR spectrometer used for monitoring brain activity, muscle oxygenation, and other physiological parameters by measuring the absorbance and scattering of NIR light in biological tissues. NIR often uses wavelengths in the 700nm to 900nm range for tissue oxygenation and hemodynamic studies.
  • Biometric Systems: Devices such as fingerprint scanners and iris recognition systems use NIR LEDs to enhance image contrast and detail, improving accuracy and reliability.
  • Moisture Analyzers: NIR LEDs, often in combination with SWIR LEDS, are used in sensors for non-destructive moisture measurement in grains, textiles, wood, and other materials. These devices help in quality control and optimization of drying processes. Moisture Analyzers frequently operate in the 940nm to 1650nm range, targeting specific water absorption bands for accurate moisture measurement.
  • Material Sorting Systems: NIR LEDs assist in identifying different materials based on their spectral response, which is helpful in recycling facilities for sorting plastics, textiles, and other materials. Often, both NIR (NIR I) and SWIR or NIR II light sources are used to identify plastic, elastomer, resins, and polymers in scrap or recycling applications. Material Sorting Systems use a wide range of NIR and SWIR wavelengths, often including specific bands between 700nm and 2500nm, to differentiate materials based on their unique spectral fingerprints.
  • Fluorometers: These instruments typically use 700nm to 900nm NIR LEDs to excite fluorescent dyes or molecules in samples, measuring the emitted light to analyze concentration, binding activities, and other properties. While less common than UV and visible fluorescent dyes, NIR fluorescent dyes are also used for imaging microarrays and biological tissue samples because much less background fluorescence occurs.
